Concert #21/Groveling Obeisance #9: Univox @ Building 16

Concert #21: Devil Eyes, Univox, Night Burger June 24 @ Building 16, Providence

Night Burger – Noisy synthesizer-based song-writer.  Very good.

Univox – Totally blew me away.  My friend James predicted they would be good, based on their sound-check tomfoolery.  He was correct:  Mission of Burma and Oxford Collapse would be proud to see these dudes play.

Creative punk rock played with an immense amount of charismatic energy.  Good tunes, good chops, good times.

Never heard them before and left with quite an impression haha!

Devil Eyes – Real-deal punk rockers from the talent-rich city of  Montreal.

Already covered their lives in Groveling Obeisance #7.  You should see them to believe them, tons of happiness coming your way!

Bonus: Read the Groveling Obeisance #9 interview with Univox, found below.

Without further ado:

Groveling Obeisance #9: Univox

1.  Why do you make music?

Josh (Univox): In all sincerity, we make music to score points impressing people in a vain attempt to absolve ourselves of failure and sadness, and for any inch of talent we have there lies behind it a mountain of fear.  The range is called Univox.

2.  What records, off the top of your head, greatly changed the way you thought about music?

Simon and Garfunkel’s Sounds of Silence

David Bowie’s the Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust

Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love

Electric Prunes’ Mass in F Minor

Mikis Theodorakis’s soundtrack for Z

Greyroom Breakthrough’s Shock in the Key of Red, Ornette Coleman’s the Shape of Jazz to Come, Randy Newman’s Randy Newman, T Rex’s Slider, the Fall’s Perverted by Language, the Who’s Tommy, Nina Simone’s Fodder on My Wings, the Four Tops’ Top 10 Hits, Clinic’s Internal Wrangler, the Zombies’ Odyssey and Oracle, the Stooges’ Funhouse and Sun Ra’s Space is the Place to name some big ones.

3.  What is the silliest word you can think of?

Sociology.  That shit will never catch on.

Groveling Obeisance #7/Upcoming Local Show: Devil Eyes

When you blew out those candles on your last birthday cake, what did you wish for?  World peace? Your secret crush (Sarah Palin) to finally bang you?  Free footlong subs, personally made by Jared Fogle, from Subway?

If you wished for “demented Montreal punks to tour through Providence,” your weird hopes will finally be achieved!

Thursday night those dreams will be realized: Devil Eyes are coming to Building 16, a sweet space found in the bowels of Olneyville, Providence.  Email me for directions…

Check out the first track from their self-titled LP: Rip My Heart Out

Plus, they are playing with these other crazy cats:

Blood Huff, Blister Pack, Univox, and Night Burger

I sat down with Devil Eyes’ Matt Kober and discussed the most important issues the world is facing today:

1.  Why do you make music?

It’s better than a kick in the ass.  Usually.

2.  What records, off the top of your head, greatly changed the way you thought about music?

Butthole Surfers – Hairway to Steven
Paul Leary showed me how to murder a guitar proper, this record freaks me out so much I still listen to it every other month.  “I Saw an X Ray of a Girl Passing Gas” is one of the most perfect rock songs ever written.

Captain Beefheart – Troutmaskreplica
This record transcends everything, it’s pure punk.  I think listening to it will actually fragment your brain.

Sun City Girls – Dantes Disneyland Inferno
it’s like blood in your ears, some stuff will stay with you for life

Old Time Relijun – 2012
Exuma – Exuma
both these records i consider actually dangerous to play, you gotta be prepared for crazy shit to happen, they draw up some crazy voodoo

Bob Marley & The Wailers – Burnin’
listen to bob marley.

3.  What is your favorite smell?

Emily, bassiste of Devil Eyes and my wife always smells like cupcakes even after a show, and i love that.
